Blithe Spirit, a comedy by Noël Coward.
Novelist Charles Condomine, invites the eccentric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira. Blithe Spirit, by Noel Coward, has a history of being challenged, mainly due to the Spiritualism at the heart of the show. The onstage portrayal of a séance and communicating with the dead has caused concern with outspoken members of the community.
In the fall of 2007 at South Walton High School in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, Blithe Spirit was canceled by the county Board of Education after community complaints that the play might “encourage exploration of witchcraft and the occult” and undermine students’ commitments to monogamous relationships. But in the end, the show went on as the production was moved off campus to nearby Seaside Repertory Theatre.
